Highlights

The PJ model is a bit unique in that all models shared the same engineering code. This is the only time in the 1930s where that is true. This is the first year that Chrysler has managed to have the production start and end dates coincide with the industry standard “model year”.

Full length water jackets are now used on the engine and cooling is also improved with a water distribution tube inserted the length of the block. With the cooling improvements and revised ignition (Delco-Remy dropped in favor of Autolite) Chrysler was able to raise the compression ratio and get more power from the same displacement engine as 1934.

The independent front suspension of 1934 was dropped for cost reasons, but Chrysler engineers did improve the ride by applying lessons learned on the Airflow. Specifically the car's center of gravity was moved forward to be closer to the center of the wheel base and longer, softer front springs than usual for the time were used to match front and rear spring rates. To control body roll, which could have been made worse with the softer springs, a front stabilizer bar was introduced. Topping it off the shock absorbers were double acting. The frame was dropped resulting in a lower center of gravity (and, for the first time, a center hump for drive shaft clearance). The result was reported to be a smoother ride with better handling.

Mechanically, things are becoming mature. In some advertisements, this Plymouth was touted as being an 80 MPH car. From here up until the introduction of the V8 in the 1950s the Plymouth advertising generally promoted economy, styling and creature comforts rather than mechanical innovation.

The 1935 Plymouth PJ Web Site is maintained by the Plymouth Owner's Club technical advisor for the PJ. More detailed information about this year's models may be found there.
